MOSAIC 301: JOURNEY INTO MOSAICS

Mosaic 301 is an extension of Mosaic 101 and Mosaic 201 whilst also venturing into other techniques such as tempered glass and making mosaics on mesh, as well as using a variety of materials. Over six weeks, students will learn how to create a mosaic from start to finish. We will meet once a week for three hours and create two pieces, one for interior use and another suitable for exterior use, grouting both on the last day. The interior mosaic will be made using glass while the exterior mosaic will be created with ceramic on mesh. We will discuss how to prep the substrate, appropriate selection of materials, adhesives, safety, tile setting, design basics & terminology. A list of resources is available in the handouts provided. This class is suitable for the beginner as well as those with some mosaic experience who would like to extend their knowledge of making mosaics. No art or mosaic experience necessary!

INTRODUCTION TO GLASS MOSAICS

This two day workshop delves into the big, wide world of glass and their use in mosaics. Students will create a mosaic using stained glass, vitreous glass tile, glass gems, mirror and other tesserae. We will cover how to cut glass using a glass cutter and running pliers as well as wheeled nippers. Use of a glass grinder is also available and students are encouraged to try it out. We will discuss how to get the best out of your tools along with prepping the substrate, adhesives & setting the tesserae. It is recommended, but not mandatory, to attend the Mosaic 101 class. Students will create a mosaic wall hanging approximately 30cm square. Handouts are included in this class. The two-day workshop does not include grouting your project in class.

PATTERNS & SHAPES: PUSH-IN TECHNIQUE

If you love mosaics, but aren’t too keen on grouting then this course is for you! Over two days students will learn yet another technique used in making mosaics - the "push-in" method. We will make a mirror or wall hanging using a mix of tesserae including but not limited to glass, ceramic, mirror & millefiori. Students will learn to create a piece inspired by patterns and shapes in the vein of Persian rugs, Indian tapestries or representational imagery. Learning to cut all the different glass tesserae, the type of adhesive to use for this technique, using the right amount of adhesive as well as placing each piece effectively is thoroughly discussed and then implemented. Feel free to bring any tile or special mementos to include in your piece.
It is recommended, but not mandatory, to attend the Mosaic 101 class. Handouts are included.

MOSAIC MIRRORS

A two day workshop on how to construct a mosaic mirror from scratch. Students will primarily use glass in this workshop - vitreous glass & stained glass. Cutting basics is covered, as well as setting techniques. Students will create a mirror approximately 40cm x 40cm, suitable for indoor use. Think outside the square, literally, and get creative! A mirror need not be square or rectangular. Students will cut out their final shape using a jigsaw so don't be constrained by angular shapes - unless you want to be! The mirror itself does not need to be a block piece - it could be strips of mirror, mirror cut up and reassembled (just like a mosaic), the mirror can be placed off centre etc... Lots to think about!! Please note that grouting is not covered in this course. Signing up to the Grout Clinic is strongly encouraged. It is also recommended, but not mandatory, to attend the Mosaic 101. No art or mosaic experience necessary! No power tool experience necessary either!

KIDS' MOSAIC

Mosaics and kids in many ways go hand in hand. Kids simply "get it". The focus of the class, other than the obvious safety factor, is first and foremost to have fun! And lots of it. Children are taught the basics of making a mosaic and will create a mosaic from their own simple drawing. A parent or guardian must accompany their child. Please contact Kim to make arrangements for this class. This class is aimed at children from 6 - 12 years of age.
No previous mosaic experience necessary. Projects are grouted separately without the children present.
