All Levels

Are you ready to learn something new? Have you always wanted to give mosaics a go? Classes are catered to beginning and intermediate students. My mission is to create a safe, communal space for all kinds of artists - beginners to professionals - to come together and express their creative sides. I believe in unlocking the creative within each and every one of us, and try to offer a wide range of classes for all students. Whether you’re a brand new student hoping to learn a thing or two about art, or if you’re simply interested in picking up a new hobby, I'm here to welcome you into the fold.
Read below to learn more about classes on offer and to find one that suits you, and be sure to read the FAQ!

Term classes meet once a week for 7 weeks, mostly according to the school terms in the ACT.

This class will be suitable for all levels. Beginning students will create a stepping stone or wall hanging/trivet to get started. You will learn everything I cover in the Beginning Mosaics class and can choose to make either a ceramic or glass mosaic or if you have time, both. We all work at different paces and the tempo of the class is set by each individual.

If you already have mosaic experience or are an existing student wishing to work on your own project with support & tuition from me, this class is also great for you.

Open Studio is an opportunity for existing students to continue their practice in my studio. My intention with opening up my studio is to foster creativity and encourage experimentation, for participants to feel comfortable and encouraged to try new things, take risks, make mistakes and to explore new ways independently.

It is expected that participants will have some experience and be comfortable to work independently as there is no tuition provided.

If you are looking to build on from my beginner classes and have a clear idea of what you wish to focus on, but nowhere to create, then this is a perfect environment for you.

The studio fee includes the use of the space and tools per 3-hour session and projects can be stored until completed. You can bring your own materials or purchase from me. Come to one session or as many as you like!

Discounts apply for purchase of all 6 sessions upfront.

Understanding Andamento

In this workshop, students will gain an understanding of the visual grammar of mosaics by looking at both traditional and modern andamento and opus and understanding how to apply them to their own mosaics in terms of cutting and laying tesserae.
Day one is theoretical and consists of presentations and exercises on paper. No drawing skills are necessary. Participants will leave with a practical understanding of the grammar of mosaics and the effects that can be achieved. On day two, participants put the theory into practice by mosaicing the design they prepared in the afternoon of day 1, using the direct method. Full course notes and exercises are provided.

Marian Shapiro is an award winning contemporary artist. She is fascinated by the creative tension of using ancient techniques and traditional materials to make modern art.  Her pieces are often inspired by the materials used and by the contrasts that are achieved by mixing different textures in the same piece: the roughness of marble against the smoothness of glass. The density of colour in smalti and the softness of unglazed ceramic.

The focus of this class is to create a mosaic on a glass substrate (approx 25cm sq) using stained glass. Choosing glass, cutting glass, specific adhesives for glass on glass (GOG) mosaics and substrates are all discussed in detail. Grouting specific to GOG mosaics is covered on the second day, however students are expected to do this in their own time. Students will create a mosaic on a glass substrate using my templates or BYO, that can then be framed and hung outdoors in the garden or in another manner suitable to your needs. Class handouts supplied. Please bring lunch.

Looking for a team bonding exercise, a Hen's Party idea or something similar? I can customise workshops with a specific project in mind. These private workshops are capped at 4-5 participants. Projects are usually group oriented such as a lantern, birdbath, single wall panel etc.
I am also offering private one on one sessions for individuals or small family groups to create a memorial mosaic to remember and honour someone you have lost.

Learn. Create. Inspire.

We all have an inner urge to create things with our hands, mind and soul. Time to reignite that spark!

I started teaching in 2009 and work extremely hard to help cultivate the inner artist in all of my students and guests who sign up for my mosaic classes.

I offer a variety of workshops and classes, including Visiting Artists both from here in Australia and from overseas, in order to inspire and enhance everyone’s creative spark and spirit while giving you a strong technical foundation and good studio habits.

Make sure you don’t miss out on any of the fun by registering today.
